Estee Lauder Rebel Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick

Estee Lauder Rebel Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a cool-toned, rosy medium-dark pink with a frosted sheen. MAC Pink Pearl is more muted, glossier. NARS Never Say Never is purpler. NYX Rose is lighter. Chanel Belgravia is very close in color but less frosted.

Estee Lauder described the color as “rich, satiny color” with an emphasis on how lightweight and lustrous the finish and feel are. The press release actually states “highly pigmented shades” with a “creamy, lightweight matte formula [that] exudes a sheer and satin finish.” So, “sheer” in the product name is not in relation to the color payoff–just so we’re clear! The formula is also supposed to “add moisture and hydrate.”

Rebel provided mostly opaque color coverage, but it clung and felt like it was sucking all the moisture out of my lips only moments after applying. I wore this, and it wasn’t pleasant; it lasted for five and a half hours (yay!) but was terribly drying.  It was a stiffer consistency, not really the creamy texture they seemed to be going after, and as I applied it, the lipstick tugged and dragged on my lips.  The lipstick comes in a slim twist-up container in the color of the lipstick inside.

Estee Lauder Demure Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a cool-toned, medium-dark fuchsia pink with a soft iridescent frost sheen. It has a frosted matte finish. NARS 413 BLKR is actually very similar–a smidgen darker but otherwise close both in color and finish. Illamasqua Atomic is also close in color and finish, as it has that frosted matte look and fuchsia hue.

Estee Lauder’s most recent lipstick formula is a far cry from where mattes have come; this feels like an old school matte: the kind that’s clingy, drying, and so hard to endure wearing. The color just gets sucked onto the lips leaving them looking dry and chapped, rather than healthy, and it really does feel like it’s sucking all of the moisture of your lips while it wears.  Demure wears for six hours, though, and leaves behind a noticeable stain, too.  The consistency is stiff, so it pulls and tugs at the lips when you apply the color.

Estee Lauder Naked Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.10 oz.) is light, slightly brightened, pink-coral with a subtle frosted shimmer and matte finish, along with soft, warm undertones. MAC Coral Bliss is darker, less bright, and pinker. Burberry Devon Sunset is darker and more luminous. NARS Bolero is pinker. MAC Betty Bright is brighter and pinker.

Naked was an improvement from the other two I’ve tried (Demure and Rebel). I wouldn’t say it’s something I’d even consider, but it was remarkably less drying compared other shades in the formula. You can even see how it looks more flattering when worn, too, because the consistency of the lipstick is creamier, less stiff and dry. It had rich, opaque color coverage (which is why “Sheer Matte” is a misleading name), and it applied decently without too much tugging or pulling.  Like drier mattes, this absolutely hung on for longer than the average lipstick at good wear through the sixth hour.  It was slightly drying but not horrifically drying, so again, improvement from the others.

Estee Lauder Rock Candy Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick ($25.00 for 0.10 oz.) is bold, brightened orange with hints of red in it along with a frosted, matte finish and warm undertones. Hourglass Muse is more coral, redder. MAC Scarlet Ibis is darker, redder. Estee Lauder Wild Fire is redder and luminous. YSL Blood Orange is glossier and sheerer.

This is the final shade I tried out in the formula, and it fell in the middle of the spectrum; not the worst, not the best. I’m still surprised that Estee Lauder didn’t put out a better formula, because the brand has better lipsticks in their house, not to mention the numerous lipstick formulas across other brands under the Estee Lauder umbrella.  Rock Candy has excellent pigmentation–full, opaque color coverage–but the consistency is a bit dry and not creamy enough, so it does tug on the lips when you apply it.  The other issue I had was that it is drying.  It wasn’t the most drying lipstick I’ve tried, but it was more than just a little drying after wearing it for six full hours.

Estee Lauder Steel Stay-On Shadow Paint ($24.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a steely gray with gold and silver sparkle. It’s like a silvered pewter with a lot of sparkle and shine. Chanel Epatant is warmer, greener. Inglot #454 is warmer, less sparkly. Maybelline Audacious Asphalt is grayer, darker.

I can’t tell you how utterly fascinating this color is, only to be supremely disappointed at the quality of the product as a whole. It sparkles, dazzles, shimmies and dances in the light. It is so brilliant on the skin when I swatched it. On the lid, it is a mess; spotty color payoff, uneven color and texture, and looks creased from the get-go. The application is gritty, chunky, and never looks smooth. It made my lids look heavy and wrinkled. The disappointment didn’t stop there, though, because the fall out from this as it flaked off my lid throughout the day was painful and messy.  I tried finger-tips, sponge-tip applicators, a variety of brushes, and nothing worked even decently.  The only good thing I can say about the product is the color and way it sparkles is beautiful, but you never really get to see or enjoy it because it just doesn’t work well in practice.

Estee Lauder Sinister Stay-On Shadow Paint ($24.00 for 0.14 oz.) is medium-dark black with silver sparkle. MAC Blackground has a warmer base and smaller shimmer. Urban Decay Oil Slick is also a bit warmer (and a powder product). Buxom Black Lab is similar but has multi-colored sparkle.

It had so-so color payoff; it is more easily applied as a sheer wash of color (so then it turns into a dark gray), and if you attempt to build up the color, it doesn’t work out so well. It tended to bunch up and layer in odd ways so that it didn’t give you a smooth, even result. The texture was smoother than Steel, but it had a very dry, almost flaky texture once it dried down. The color came off in chunks throughout the day. I tested it twice just to be sure, but it was the same: splotchy color, fall out, and then light creasing after eight hours.

Estee Lauder Emotional (140) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “warm, rusty brown.” It’s a medium-dark red with strong, warm undertones and a luminous shine. It had mostly opaque color coverage–there was a slight translucency overall–and long-wear that topped in at six hours, plus it left a residual stain. It was moderately hydrating and comfortable to wear. Fyrinnae Winter Romance (P, $7.00) is slightly darker. Tom Ford Beauty Rouge Fatal (LE, $45.00) is brighter. Estee Lauder Decadent (150) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “deep, rich red-brown.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark reddish-brown that almost looks like a really warm-toned plum. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a little translucency, but the consistency was lightly creamy, so the lipstick was easy to apply and comfortable to wear for the five hours it lasted on me. Bobbi Brown Pink Kiss (P, $26.00) is very similar in color, just more matte. NARS Vanessa (P, $32.00) is darker. Kat Von D Lovecraft (P, $21.00) is darker, more matte. Too Faced Taffy (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer. Urban Decay Native (P, $22.00) is slightly darker. NYX Chic (P, $4.00) is more shimmery. MAC Giddy (P, $16.00) is more shimmery. I reviewed a lot of shades from the Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick formula previously, so just to recap: the formula is supposed to be very hydrating and pigmented with a creamy consistency. Impulsive is nicely pigmented, but the creamier consistency has enough slip in it that it looks a bit streaky applied. I don’t think it’s too noticeable from a normal viewing distance, but it’s not as foolproof as other shades in the range. It lasted for four hours on me, but it was nicely hydrating during that time.

Estee Lauder Insatiable Ivory (110) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a brightened peach with warm undertones and a soft shine. It had opaque color coverage, and while it didn’t apply perfectly, it applied fairly well with minimal streakiness. The color lasted for four and a half hours (shy of the six-hours promised), but it was very hydrating and comfortable to wear. NARS Raquel (P, $32.00) is pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lament (P, $18.00) is more matte, lighter. Melt Cosmetics Summer! (P, $19.00) is brighter. Givenchy Beige Caraco (107) (P, $36.00) is browner. Too Faced Melted Nude (P, $21.00) is more matte. Revlon Jungle Peach (LE, $7.99) is a touch pinker, darker. Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) (P, $36.00) is darker. Estee Lauder Eccentric (260) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is brightened, pink-coral with warm undertones and a lightly glossy sheen. It had rich, full color coverage with a very smooth, even application. This shade, with its sheen, made my lips look smoother and plumper. The color lasted for five hours on me and was hydrating over time. NARS Natalie (P, $32.00) is more matte, darker. MAC Love Temple (LE, $22.00) is darker, pinker. Kat Von D L’Ecole des Femmes (P, $21.00) is more matte. MAC Toying Around (LE, $16.00) is darker. Revlon Snow Peach (LE, $7.99) is pinker, darker. Too Faced Bon Bon (P, $22.00) is pinker, darker. Estee Lauder Irresistible (440) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, rosy plum with warm undertones and a soft sheen. It had mostly opaque color coverage–a very slight translucency at most, which will be more apparent with those with more natural pigmentation–that covered well and went on evenly. The formula was comfortable to wear, moisturizing, and lasted for six hours on me. Tom Ford Beauty Negligee (LE, $50.00) is warmer, less glossy. Guerlain Air Kiss (304) (P, $37.00) is more shimmery, darker. Buxom Dolly (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Bittersweet (03) (LE, $49.00) is warmer, darker. MAC Out for Passion (LE, $20.00) is sheerer. Too Faced Pink Chocolate (P, $22.00) is warmer, brighter. Urban Decay Strip (P, $22.00) is very similar. Chanel Ce Soir (P, $34.00) is cooler-toned. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a glossy finish. The formula was hydrating and long-wearing, staying true for over six hours while leaving a lingering stain behind. Estee Lauder Carnal (370) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright, orange-red with a luminous finish and warm undertones. It was intensely pigmented and applied evenly and smoothly. The color lasted for over six hours, and it left behind a reddish stain. The formula was creamy, hydrating, and comfortable to wear without feathering around the edges. Tom Ford Beauty Flame (06) (P, $50.00) is lighter, more matte. NARS Carmen (P, $32.00) is similar. Estee Lauder Insolent Plum (450) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a cool-toned berry with blue undertones and a luminous sheen. It had fairly opaque coverage, but there was a noticeable translucency. The consistency on this one was more slippery than other shades, which made it apply less evenly in comparison to most of what I’ve tried in the range. It lasted for six hours, but I did experience slight feathering during the last hour. This is one of the more recently added shades to the range (and the last one that I have for now). It had rich, opaque color coverage that went only smoothly and evenly. The consistency is lightly creamy but not too slippery, so it adheres comfortably to the lips and yields longer wear (six hours on me). The formula is vanilla-scented but taste-free. This particular shade was hydrating over time. I really loved this shade, and I think it’s a great addition to the range–the muted quality to the color makes it more interesting to me.
